20081005 01 Chicago Ska trip day 2 part 1 of 2

LOS VICIOS DE PAPA were the first band on Sunday afternoon. I got there after they started. I liked them a lot. Lots of percusion and the guitar player had cool effects on his pedals. It made me dance without beer and sweat out some of the previous night’s poisons.

I took a trip for my birthday to see Dr. Ring Ding, Roy Ellis, and Monkey. Day 3 of 2008’s best ska and reggae fest! ALL AGES MATINEE- Legendary German ska/reggae/dancehall singer DR RING DING, MONKEY, SKAPONE, and LOS VICIOS DE PAPA.

There was no encore and the club shooed us out pretty quickly to get ready for LAMF battle of the bands.

Another two part Song of the Day. Part 2: New-school dub.

The huge popularity of dub music created a new kind of artist/producer who created tracks from scratch, rather than remixing an existing reggae tune. The sound shifted from the more organic old-school sound to a new synthesized and ‘digital’ sound using various methods of studio trickery. The mixing board morphed from a producers tool to an instrument in its own right. The birth of this movement took place in the early 80′s and was centered around London England. Early practitioners are Mad Professer, Jah Shaka, and Scientist.
